Seven Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Vacations

Article by Kevin Eikenberry

This may seem like a very strange title for an article. After all, a vacation is supposed to be… a vacation. The title seems to imply that we should strive to make our vacation, somehow strategic or productive. In a way, that is what I am suggesting, but maybe not in the anal-retentive way you might have first guessed.I write this during a week of my vacation, because I have a weekly writing quota so I don’t disappoint my loyal newsletter readers. I could have run a repeat article, or I could have written the article before I left, but since I had already decided to write something about vacations, and because I do like to write, I decided it might be best to write about vacations while on vacation.Vacations are important to our mental, physical and emotional health. They provide us a chance to relax, change our perspective and reconnect with parts of ourselves that we might misplace during the daily routine. Some people travel great distances, others stay closer to home. Some like to relax on the beach and others choose more active, scheduled vacations. This article isn’t about those choices – you know what type of vacation works best for you. Rather, this article is meant to help you enjoy and benefit more from the vacation, regardless of where you go, or what you do.Think about how you got there. Most people spend a huge amount of time thinking about, planning, and preparing for their vacations. And they get a tremendous amount of work done in the few days (hours?) before they leave. In other words, when it comes to vacations we are all good project planners and time managers. This experience of planning and preparing is the first lesson we can take from our vacation. While you are on vacation reflect on how productive you were in the days leading up to your departure. You will find lessons you can apply on other days to help you be more productive – and therefore give you more time during your regular life for leisure and relaxation.Start when you leave. I have heard people say things like, “I need a two week vacation, because it takes me 4 or 5 days to start enjoying the vacation.” To this sentiment, I simply ask “Why?”. Resolve that when you are on vacation, you are there. Don’t tell yourself it will take 2 days or 1 day to “get relaxed.” Relax already!Immerse yourself. Whether you are sitting on the beach, on a tour bus or walking through a local shopping bazaar, be there. Experience the things around you. Be in the present moment. Even if things aren’t going like you planned, if the water is cold or it is raining, be where you are. Vacations are huge anticipation machines. We build them up in our minds until there is almost no way the real thing can compete with the image. Immerse yourself in what it is. Be present and enjoy it, regardless of what happens.Recharge. Academic institutions have known for a long time the value in spending time in a new situation. That is why sabbaticals are a part of the lives of faculty members in much of the world. Sabbaticals are, in some ways, like long vacations. A vacation puts us in a new environment, changes our routine, and gives us a chance to recharge our batteries. This quote from the book I read on this vacation states it better than I can:“You have to think more like a fish than a man and look for the slack tides and the pools and eddies in life so you can catch your breath and reflect on the good moments.”-Jimmy Buffett in A Salty Piece of LandLearn Something. No this isn’t like homework; I’m not suggesting you send me a report on “What You Learned on Your Summer Vacation.” But I am serious about learning something. Learn something in a museum. Learn something from the local people or customs. Learn something about the tides. Learn something from someone in the seat next to you on your flight. As humans we are most alive when we are learning, and vacations should be no exception.Make memories. Vacations are a wonderful way to expand our experiences and to create memories. New memories will enrich our lives both now and in the future. They also serve as the spawning ground for new ideas and insights that we may benefit from in all areas of our lives. After you make the memories, capture them. Record the events in your journal, purchase postcards, take pictures. These activities will help preserve those precious memories.Take them. If you stay at work without vacationing because you are “indispensable, but are never fresh and always burned out, what have you gained? Besides that, research says that people that take vacations live longer than those who don’t. I don’t think I can make a more compelling argument than that. If you have already taken a vacation in recent months, think back on it and see how many of my suggestions you followed. If you have an upcoming vacation, I encourage you to consider my ideas, and apply at least one or two of them to that vacation. All of these suggestions will help make your vacation more valuable, more entertaining and more fun. Plus, the vacation itself will help you live longer.Have fun!

10 Reasons Vacation Rentals Beat Hotels

Article by Laura

Before you make hotel reservations, ask yourself: Are you really getting the best deal? Is your hotel room going to be something you’ll remember for years to come? Are you tired of staying in the same old hotel room over and over again?

If you hesitated to answer any of these questions, maybe it’s time to think about vacation rentals. They’ve always been around, but until now they’ve been somewhat hard to find. On vast online directories, like Vacation Rentals.com, however — it’s easier than ever to discover your perfect home away from home!

But to make an informed decision about staying in a vacation rental, it’s a good idea to compare it to your only other alternative — hotels. So here are 10 reasons you should pick a vacation rental over a hotel.

1. Vacation rentals are BIGThis really goes without saying; probably one of the top advantages of a vacation rental over a hotel is its size. Multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and full kitchens and living rooms… you’ll have plenty of room to move about on your vacation in a vacation rental.

2. Vacation rentals are PACKED WITH AMENITIESFrom a wide screen hi-definition TV to a private swimming pool to a pool table, the amenities in a vacation rental run the gamut and you’d have to spend your savings to get as many in a hotel room!

3. Vacation rentals are CHEAPWhether you’re traveling with just your honey or 10 of your closet friends, a vacation rental is almost always going to cost you less than a hotel. That’s because a nightly hotel rate is often the same or higher than a weekly vacation rental rate!

4. Vacation rentals are COMFYRemember that a vacation rental is usually a person’s second home, so the owner’s made it the way they like it, not the way they think a random stranger would like it. So, every comfort you enjoy at home can be expected in a vacation rental!

5. Vacation rentals are PRIVATEDon’t worry about other hotel guests passing you in the hallway on the way to the elevator or making noise in their room through paper thin walls. Don’t share a swimming pool with a bunch of other people you don’t know. Instead, choose a vacation rental and choose whether or not you want neighbors near or far away! You’ll even have privacy from other members in your party, as vacation rentals are known to feature several bedrooms.

6. Vacation rentals are VERSATILEWant a beach condo with a view that’s perfect for you and your significant other? Need a huge town home in the city that’s big enough for you and your extended family? Whether you’re looking for simplicity or all the bells and whistles, vacation rentals deliver!

7. Vacation rentals are UNIQUENo vacation rental is identical to another vacation rental. You certainly can’t say that for a hotel room! There’s no way you’ll forget the vacation rental you stay in; it will be part of your vacation, not just lodging for your vacation.

8. Vacation rentals are PET-FRIENDLYWell, not all vacation rentals are. But many are, and all you have to do is search for pet-friendly accommodations! You’ll have to look very hard to find a pet-friendly hotel and even when you do find one, you’ll be disappointed when you learn about all the rules and regulations you’ll have to abide by during your stay.

9. Vacation rentals are KID-FRIENDLYTraveling with the kids? Don’t you want peace of mind that they’re always safe? In a hotel, with multiple rooms, floors, and a swimming pool that’s far away, it’s hard to keep track of the little ones. In a vacation rental, everyone’s under one big roof!

10. Vacation Rentals are A GREAT ALTERNATIVE WHEN HOTELS ARE SOLD-OUTMaking a last-minute booking? Can’t find a hotel that’s in your area or your budget? Try a vacation rental instead! This is a great opportunity for you to stay in a vacation rental for the first time. Remember that vacation rentals are in and around all your favorite destinations, including New York City, Disney World, Las Vegas, and Mexico! So, if you’re ready to do something different this time around, start your search at sites like http://www.VacationRentals.com!

Are You Having Healthy Vacation?

Article by David Crawford

Your Vacation

When your head starts drooping about three o’clock in the afternoon, when you begin complaining of the heat, and when your work loses much of its usual interest, you are about ready for your vacation. You may think you are doing better to stay home and work. Scientific studies show, however, that a vacation is an asset from the financial point of view, because you do more productive work afterward than you did before.

An old-time doctor was asked by a young assistant how to run his office successfully. The doctor gave him two suggestions for routine treatment. “First,” he said, “ask your patients what they eat and order something else; second, find out where they are going on their vacations and send them someplace else.” The old doctor knew from common experience that most people do not pick their vacations properly for health and rest.

Any vacation should bring about a change from the routine of daily life, but rest is most important.

Vacation Food And Drink

In picking a place for your vacation always consider questions of health. Pure water, good sanitation, pure milk and a good food supply are absolutely essential.

Any exposed drinking water is a possible source of danger. Seaside springs should be distrusted. Health authorities ought to cover them with concrete and arrange to discharge the flowing water into a river or a sewer. Any spring water properly filtered and treated with chlorine may be considered safe. Spring water in camps may be protected by suitable disposal of sewage. Water unfit for drinking is probably equally unfit for bathing, in most instances. It is always wise to take some drinking water with you when you go on a camping trip.

Dishes may be washed in water taken from springs or rivers, provided the water is first thoroughly boiled. It is safer to eat canned vegetables and fruits than to take a chance on vegetables sold at a roadside stand, without proper equipment for cleaning them. Improper handling of vegetables may be responsible for many kinds of illness.

Flies around eating places are a constant menace. Eating places should be guarded from flies by use of mosquito netting or screening.

Some persons traveling on vacations try to get along with a diet of bread, eggs, and coffee. Such diets are tiresome and lack the essentials of a well-balanced diet, which include fresh fruits, vegetables, and plenty of milk. A suitable diet is a great help to a healthful vacation.

Many persons who go to American-plan hotels overeat and return from their vacations with digestion completely disordered by the extra strain they have borne during the weeks supposed to be given to rest. Your internal organs need a rest, as well as the muscles and the brain.

A Healthful Vacation

Chief factors of a healthful vacation can be listed as follows: first, change of occupation; second, sunshine and the open air; third, plenty of rest at night and during the day; fourth, congenial friends and surroundings; fifth, freedom from social routine.

This, for instance, was the type of vacation long taken by Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and John Burroughs-all noted for hard work, success and long lives. These representative notables used to travel about in a motor car, camping at night in the woods or in some convenient place. They were with congenial people who were not included in their usual environment. They had interesting conversation different from that of their daily lives. They went to bed early at night and arose when they wished in the morning. They were not governed by any routine on their vacation. They did not have to dress for meals or for the evening but wore the most comfortable and roughest clothing that they had. Their vacations have become proverbial as representing the best type.

Your vacation always should be selected according to your build and; your state of health. The real vacation for the average city dweller is one in which he can have comforts suitable to the conditions of his body. Instead of attaining these comforts, many a worker who has had fifty weeks of office routine tries mountain climbing or playing thirty-six holes of golf daily, putting terrific stress on his blood vessels and his heart. Thereafter, instead of sleeping in a comfortable bed, he finds a strange bed with a mattress concocted from cotton, straw, or corncobs. Then he wonders why his back and his thighs hurt so much when he gets up the next morning.

Touring And Camping

The people who really have to worry most about their vacations are those who take to the road. It is astounding how much wreckage a family vacation in a motor car can bring about, from a health point of view. Driving all day means that the calls of nature are ignored. Cinders fly in the eye; elbows and knees are bumped and rubbed. The digestion is disturbed and the muscles are cramped by hours of sitting in contorted positions. Children suffer from the glare of the sun, the dust of the road, the impossibility of getting the right kind of food, insect bites, bad meals and water. A baby should never be taken on such a vacation, and even children from two to six years of age are likely to suffer from such performances.

Fortunately, most of our states have taken over control of motor camps, so that you can be reasonably sure in such camps of suitable water and milk supplies. Smart tourists nowadays carry along twenty or thirty yards of mosquito netting to fend off insects. There is little fear of infection from the average mosquitoes in the northern part of the United States, but a mosquito bite that itches or bleeds can spoil any vacation. A weak solution of camphor or a one-per-cent solution of menthol in a suitable lotion will stop the itching and give comfort.

Every camper ought to take along a spade and a first-aid kit. The spade is used to bury remnants of food, empty tin cans, and bottles. These always should be buried twenty-five feet from any running stream or body of water. The spade also is used to cover fires.

The first-aid kit should contain, at least, a bottle of tincture of iodine,a cake of soap, two rolls of gauze, some cotton, and adhesive plaster. It should also carry some of the family’s favorite laxative, vaseline or petrolatum, and a simple ointment for abrasions, chafing, and sunburn. Any ordinary zinc-oxide ointment serves this purpose. There should be cold cream for use on dry, chapped lips and perhaps a small amount of some antiseptic solution that is really antiseptic and will not act as a caustic on a bum. Such a first-aid kit may save a life, and is of great help in securing comfort and relief from pain in emergencies Manufacturers now make such kits for use of motorists.

Nervous Breakdown

There seems to be an idea that anyone who suffers from nervous exhaustion or nervous breakdown will be benefited by a sea voyage. Such voyages do have the advantage of taking people away from their usual surroundings. But certain precautions must be taken.

If depression is a prominent symptom the intervals between ports should be short. People who are melancholic become more and more depressed by the sight of nothing but water for several days. People who have been ill and get seasick easily should not take a sea voyage for convalescence. A person who has had a nervous breakdown should never travel alone.

After all, the choice of a vacation is a relatively simple matter if you are reasonable, but it does demand a good deal of foresight. A good vacation is one during which you enjoy yourself thoroughly, in which you are rested when you return, and in which your mind selects a new groove. A good vacation is one without undue exposure to the sun, the rain or the cold or bad weather generally, particularly if you suffer from coughs or colds, hay fever or asthma.

A good vacation is one in which the persons who surround you are so congenial that you never lose your temper. A good vacation is one in which your health is benefited, as determined by effects on your digestion, your blood pressure, your circulation, and your nervous system. A good vacation is one taken in a place where there is pure water, pure milk, and a good food supply. A good vacation is one in which the muscles are exercised, but not to the point of exhaustion or danger to the tissue beyond repair. A good vacation is one in which you think of your business, but do not worry about it. A man who thinks so little of his business that he can forget it completely while on a vacation is not in the right business.

Best of the Janes: Taking Vacations

Article by Michele DeKinder Smith

Individual business owners must consider their individual needs and desires when planning for vacation. Those needs and desires vary, depending on finances, habits, mindsets and characteristics. However, several considerations should be common to all types of business owners, regardless of situation. This article outlines those considerations and provides tips for handling them thoroughly before a vacation, so that the time away truly provides rest and relaxation.

1. Plan, plan, plan. From scheduling a vacation or retreat for a company’s “quiet” season, to creating a contingency plan if contact from a team member is absolutely critical, entrepreneurs will find that they can more easily enjoy themselves if they have carefully planned every aspect of rest and relaxation as it relates to their business.  Decide on availability. If availability is not an option, provide team members with written instructions about exactly what to do during the vacation, and delegate decision-making authority to a specific person. Always provide emergency contact information, just in case. For partial availability, provide contact information only to a limited number of team members, and then check messages or e-mails periodically. Hint: being totally available by cell phone for an entire vacation not only takes away from the ability to relax, but it also takes attention away from traveling companions. Make a vacation a true vacation, and if it’s impossible to keep the phone off all the time, just check it a couple of times per day.  If bills are due during a vacation, go online and schedule them to be paid when they’re due. Or, get them ready for mailing and ask a team member to send them on the appropriate day. Similarly, invoices can be made out ahead of time and then sent out on schedule.  If winter is the busiest time of year for a business, reduce stress by planning the vacation for the summer. Similarly, if an entrepreneur is expecting a huge shipment of inventory and knows she’ll need to unpack it and get it on the shelves right away, she should arrange to return from her vacation before the shipment arrives or to leave for the vacation well after she’s had the time she needs to get it settled in. Working around such obstacles will allow the entrepreneur to truly relax while she is on vacation.  If possible, delay the start of a new project until a few days after returning from a vacation. This provides time to check missed e-mails or phone messages. If that’s not possible, consider making all the preparations before leaving so it is possible to begin immediately upon returning. Ask a team member to help return calls or e-mails so it’s possible to devote more time to the project right away.2. Take a real vacation. It may sound obvious, but many business owners find it difficult to remove themselves from their work, even for a short time. However, an entrepreneur will function at her best when she is revitalized and energized. Here are some tips for getting the most out of vacationing:  Keep a notebook handy to jot down ideas that arise during vacation. Once they’re written down, put the notebook away for future use. Use this technique to temporarily “put away” the new ideas without worrying about forgetting them. This way, it’s possible to truly rest – and even if that rest provides excellent brainstorming opportunities, it’s possible to put them away until the vacation is over.  Retain a positive mindset when thinking about leaving the business behind. Rather than worrying about whether the team can handle things, think of this as an opportunity for them to take responsibility. Rather than worrying about customers’ reactions to the vacation, consider that they’ll admire the strong and capable team taking care of them during the vacation. Notify customers of the upcoming vacation and take care of any concerns before departing.  As mentioned above, limit availability. Spend time reconnecting with traveling companions, enjoying the new scenery, and recharging. Spending an entire vacation checking e-mail and answering the phone does not allow for true rest and relaxation – and it does not reenergize anyone.

3. Make vacationing a priority, and give it as much importance as every other appointment and obligation. Even if it is not feasible to take several weeks off, or to travel to a faraway location, everyone needs time off – even if it is one day per week. Here are some tips for ensuring that time:  Schedule “self-time” into the calendar. Literally. Schedule a lunch out with a friend, a pedicure, or a walk on a favorite trail once or twice a week. Make these appointments and stick to them. Even an hour-long break from work and all that comes with it can be refreshing enough to boost productivity and spirits for the rest of the day or week. If longer vacations aren’t possible, these shorter appointments will suffice – but try to plan for a longer vacation at some point in the future, and then look forward to it.  Fit vacations in with longer-term plans and treat them as important as semi-annual business planning retreats or annual workshops. If something comes up and makes the vacation impossible, be sure to re-schedule the vacation immediately. Don’t cancel reservations – reschedule them. Putting off a vacation indefinitely makes it less likely to happen.  If a traditional vacation isn’t possible because of time or money constraints, plan a mini vacation somewhere close by to your home or business. It’s inexpensive, requires less planning, and you can vacation for only a day or two if necessary.

Vacations don’t have to be long, far away, or expensive. But they do have to be. Rest and relaxation provide hard-working entrepreneurs with the time they need to come back to work feeling refreshed and ready to dive back in.

Keep the Vacation Afterglow Glowing

Article by www.cheapfares.com

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The warm feeling derived from purchasing cheap fares, whether they are cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages, feels even better when you return from a fabulous vacation. However, for most people after they return to work and its stresses it quickly feels like they were never on vacation. Many travelers would like to know how to retain the good feelings generated by a great trip.

A study tracking the happiness levels of 974 vacationers and 556 nonvacationers over several weeks was recently published in the journal of Applied Research in Quality of Life. The vacationers’ level of happiness was tracked before, during, and after vacation.

Not surprising, the vacationers’ happiness levels were higher than the nonvacationers pre-vacation (when they were anticipating their trips) and during their vacations, while after their vacation they felt similar to nonvacationers.

The study found that the length of the vacation had no impact on the vacationers’ later happiness levels.

The study came up with two strategies for maximizing the number of post vacation days of happiness:

* Take very relaxing vacations.

* Since the length of a vacation has no impact on later happiness the more multiple shorter vacations taken should result in more total happiness days after vacation.

The following strategies for extending the afterglow following vacation were recommended:

* Relish your most enjoyable experiences. Take pictures while on vacation and later share those pictures and special experiences with others.

* If there was someone at a hotel or one who participated in an activity that was particularly helpful to you, thank those persons (either via a call or email). Making new friends and staying in touch creates more opportunities for reminiscing.

* Vacations where the traveler learns new skills, be they yoga, art classes, or bird watching, contribute to greater happiness in the long run if the vacationer makes the effort to integrate them into his or her everyday life.www.cheapfares.com

To Take or Not to Take a Vacation?

Even with a plentiful supply of cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms, workers who feel the need for a vacation more now than it the past are often reluctant to take that vacation.

The three most common reasons for not taking a vacation, according to a recent Expedia survey were:

* The ability to get paid for unused vacation days

* The requirement to schedule vacation days in advance

* One’s significant other being unable to get time off of his/her job

Many workers are uncomfortable taking off time for a vacation because of the economy, according to a recent CareerBuilder survey. Workers indicated that they either could not afford a vacation or felt they should not be absent from work when their businesses were already understaffed.

Stress and wellness experts point out that workers earn vacation days because everyone needs time off once in a while. Vacations provide a needed change of pace, both physically and mentally.

The following are ways to eliminate counterproductive stress that some experience while on vacation:

* Identify a convenient time to take a vacation and communicate in advance with supervisors and team members. * Inform others what can be done in your absence and what needs to wait for your return.

* If cost and/or coordinating your schedule with a significant other is a problem, consider taking a “staycation.” Staycations are when you vacation from home.

* If money is an issue, look into last minute vacation packages via the Internet, which often are deeply discounted.

Once on vacation make certain that you leave work behind. www.cheapfares.com
