Accra Travel Guide

Accra is the most populous city in and the capital of . It is the administrative,
communications, and economic center of the country. Over 70% of Ghana’s
manufacturing capacity is located within the capital area. Accra has been Ghana’s capital
since 1877, and contains public buildings reflecting its transition from a 19th century
suburb of Victoriasborg to the modern metropolis it is today.

Among the attractions of Accra are the National Museum, with a display of exhibits that
reflect the heritage of Ghana from prehistoric times to modern times, the National Theatre
with its distinct modern architecture, Independence Square, the Kwame Nkrumah
Mausoleum, the Accra International Conference Centre, the fishing port at Jamestown
and Makola Market.

The University of Ghana at Legon is just 14 km north of Accra, and its distinctive buildings
are set amongst tree-lined gardens that are visited by students and visitors alike. Accra is
also linked internationally by the Kotoka International Airport.

Accra was founded by the Ga people in the late 1600s. The word Accra is derived from the word Nkran meaning “ants” in Akan, a reference to the numerous anthills seen in the
countryside around Accra. During part of its history, Accra served as a centre for trade with the Portuguese, who built a fort in the town, followed by the Swedish, Dutch, French,
British and Danish by the end of the seventeenth century.

The site of present-day Accra developed into a sizable town around the original Ga town
as well as British, Danish and Dutch forts and their surrounding communities:
Jamestown near the British fort, Osu near the Danish Christianborg fort (now Osu Castle)
and Ussherstown near the Dutch Ussher fort. The four areas form the core of the modern
city.

In 1877, at the end of the second Anglo-Asante War, Accra replaced Cape Coast as the
capital of the British Gold Coast colony. After the completion of a railway to the mining and agricultural interior, Accra became the economic centre of Ghana. Large areas were
destroyed by earthquakes in 1862 and 1939, but the city grew around a seaport (now
relocated to Tema), and later a brewery, expanding into neighbouring towns.

Asmara Travel Guide

Asmara is the capital city and largest settlement in Eritrea, home to a population of around 579,000 people. At an elevation of over 2,000 meters (7000 ft), Asmara is on the edge of an escarpment that is both the northwestern edge of the Great Rift Valley and of the Eritrean highlands. Textiles and clothing, processed meat, beer, shoes, and ceramics are the major industrial products. Asmara started with four villages, to being a regional center under Emperor Yohannes IV of Ethiopia, to “Little Rome” of Mussolini’s unsuccessful second Roman Empire, to being a provincial capital under Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia and lastly a national capital of Eritrea.

Asmara grew from four villages founded in the twelfth century. Originally, it is said, there were four clans living in the Asmara area on the Kebessa Plateau: Gheza Gurtom, Gheza Shelele, Gheza Serenser and Gheza Asmae. Encouraged by their women, the men united the four clans and defeated the bandits who preyed on the area. After the victory, a new name was given to the place, Arbaete Asmera which literally means, in the Tigrinya language, the four (female plural) united. Eventually Arbaete was dropped and it has been called Asmera, though there is still a zone called Arbaete Asmera

The missionary Remedius Prutky passed through Asmara in 1751, and described in his memoirs that a church built there by Jesuit priests 130 years before was still intact.

Asmara undeniably acquired importance in 1881, when Ras Alula Engida whom Emperor Yohannes IV of Ethiopia had appointed governor of the region founded a market in that place. A few years later, in 1884, he moved his capital from Adi Taklay to Asmara and had three stone buildings built to house his troops and serve as his banquet hall. About the same time Ras Alula ordered all of the other markets in the Mareb Mellash province closed (which included Sazega and Kudofelasi in modern Eritrea as well as Idaga Hamus in Ethiopia), giving further economic stimulus to Asmara. The population grew from an estimated 150 people in 1830 to 2,000 during Alula’s governorship

During the Eritrean war for independence from Ethiopia, Asmara’s airport became a key in the conflict, as it was used by the Ethiopians to obtain arms and supplies from outside supporters. The last town to fall to the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front in the Eritrean War of Independence, it was besieged in 1990 and was surrendered by Military of Ethiopia troops without a fight on May 24, 1991. In Asmara the main language is Tigrinya. Italian and English are widely spoken and understood

Surf Travel Guide – Best Guide At Low Price

The Mentawai Islands, stretching from latitudes 2 to 3 degrees south off the west coast of Sumatra are without doubt the destination most aspired to by surfers worldwide and are home to a large number of the best waves on earth. Here is some additional knowledge on surf travel guide.
The Setup
Four main islands and dozens of islets are fringed by palm cultivations, 28 degree  water and coral reef, backed by dense jungle miles away from any western style  “civilisation”. Like much of Indonesia, volcanic eruptions shaped the topography  and sea bottom of these islands, making for extremely deep trenches in the ocean  floor and fast rising land mass close to the shoreline. The result is minimal dilution  of swell energy and funnelling and refraction of waves to the enormous benefit of  surfers. In conjunction with the above, the Mentawais present almost the widest  swell window and fetch in the Indian Ocean.
The Waves
The convoluted shorelines, deeply recessed bays and many islets also add variety of angle to swell and wind, so whatever the breeze or swell direction, somewhere will be offshore and lined up. It’s a slam dunk for surfers! Waves here tend to have considerable power without necessarily being heavy in the Hawaiian sense. Generally speaking, peaks are relatively predictable, enabling you to tackle larger waves than you might be able to at home. Intermediate surfers can get good waves, although some of the celebradated waves are more challenging than they look in still photos. Prepare for anything from 2-10 ft, but rarely more.So you positively need some lessons over surf travel guide.
The Reef
The quality waves are over lava based coral reef lying at varying depths. Some are flat tables with a safe covering of water, others are pocketed, pointy, shallow and hard to avoid in the event of a fall. Very few surfers come back from a trip here without some kind of a cut, so make sure you take the necessary medical supplies with you.
Season
Swell is in best supply from April to October, with July and August often representing the peak of consistency and size. This middle of season is also the driest and most crowded. Boat operations run from April to October/November for these reasons, and because, after November, the weather can get pretty unsettled. Trade-winds do not operate this close to the equator, and winds are shifting and unpredictable. Many days are wind-free, or with the breeze veering 360 degrees in 24 hours. Thanks to this, goofy footers and natural can both get their fix on the same day, with rights and lefts often next door to each other.

Travel Guide – Backpacks Versus Suitcases

Travel Guide – Backpacks Versus Suitcases

Ok so you are planning to travel, and considering taking a suitcase:

Advantages of a suitcase are: easy access to the contents, less likely to get caught in baggage conveyors, easier to store, great in airports and hotels when the little wheels touch down and smoothly roll on the concourse floors.

Disadvantages You can’t carry most suitcases for more than a few minutes. This is the main and most important disadvantage. From the point you decide to take a suitcase instead of a backpack you are tied to taking taxis, cars, booking your hotels and hostels in advance. You lose freedom. This is the advantage of a backpack and for the independent traveller freedom is one of the most important features of the journey.

Marinduque Travel Guide

A heart-shaped island in the Southern Tagalog Region is a certified tourism magnet come the Lenten Season. The province has been making waves in the travel sector behind a colorful event (odd for some) called the Moriones Festival. Aside from this religious occasion, the island is known as an alternative destination to Boracay and Palawan, as it is blessed with beautiful sand beaches, enchanting caves, unspoiled diving sites, and rejuvenating hotsprings. The place, which is commonly included in the list of recommended vacation getaways in most Philippine travel guides, is called Marinduque.

Marinduque is located at the geographical center of the Philippines. Covering an area of 952.6 square kilometers, the province is situated south and west of Quezon, east of Mindoro, and north of Romblon. It is home to around 230,000 people as of 2007, with the majority of the populace earning a living by farming and fishing.

The Marinduquenos are known to be hospitable and friendly. First-time tourists are usually welcomed with a big smile and a heart-warming putong, a traditional song-and-dance ritual performed by local folks. Putong, or tubong, in some parts of the island, also means the crowning of a guest or an honorary with flowers or gaily-decorated crowns. This practice adds to the appeal of Marinduque to both local and foreign holidaymakers.

Getting to Marinduque is not as problematic compared to other travel destinations in the archipelago. Some local airlines offer direct flights from Manila to Marinduque several times a week. As a travel tip, make reservations in advance to avoid any inconvenience. For tourists who are afraid of flying, there are buses and ships bound for the province.

The best time to go to Marinduque is during the Holy Week, when the province is all systems go for the Moriones Festival. The event is highlighted by a parade participated in by people, usually God-fearing men, wearing colorful masks and garbs replicating that of the biblical Roman soldiers. The main attraction in the festival is a show reenacting the event when, Longinus, a blind soldier, punctures Jesus with his spear and the blood droplets from the wound enables him to regain his sight.

Marinduque is also an ideal place for beach bummers. The island is dotted with unspoiled white-sand beaches and tranquil islets that are perfect for swimming and other water recreation activities such as snorkeling, windsurfing, and diving. Boac, the provincial capital, is famous for the white sand of the Poctoy Beach. Not to be outdone are the beaches in Maniwaya Island in the town of Sta. Cruz.

Accommodations vary from the very simple to the extravagant. One of the famous vacation rentals in Marinduque is the Bellarocca Island Resort and Spa, which is located on an excluded island several minutes away from the mainland. Its location makes the resort an ideal place for travelers looking to escape the hassles of the city life.

With the growing interest in nature, Marinduque has joined the bandwagon for promoting the “green” thing. The province is being promoted as a premier ecotourism destination in the Philippines. The must-see sanctuaries and protected areas in the island include the Balagbag Mountain Range, Tres Reyes Marine Sanctuary, and Malindig Volcano. The chance of tourists getting bored in Marinduque is very unlikely. Spelunking enthusiasts can explore Bathala Caves in Sta. Cruz and Tarug Caves in Mogpog while travelers looking to get their body recharged with new energy can soak in the hot springs of Malbog in Buenavista.

With so many things to do and see in Marinduque, it is no wonder, then, that the province is close to the heart of travelers.
